India's Digitization

AWS- AMAZON WEB SERVICES

AWS is a public cloud that covers 51% of the market size. It provides infrastructure-as-a-service, platform-as-a-service, and software-as-a-service. AWS is made by Amazon.

Amazon is an E-Commerce site where we can buy the product but AWS is a website where the websites are managed by different - different services.

AWS has different - different services like networking, databases, blockchain, AI, ML Quantum computing etcetera.

Firstly I would like to tell you why we need AWS or any public cloud?

Because at the start, not any investor is sure to invest in a new business, and in the starting, we don't have that many funds but let if we have funds and we bought the resources like land, electricity, HardDisks, etc. But the business was not that much more profitable than what you will do? that hardware will not be bought by anyone and here the loss happened.

So here AWS Cloud helps with the Pay-As-You-Go Model which says the services you have used just pay for that only.

As humans can’t sit 24X7 and see all the servers that are working or not but the same can be done by a program so cloud technology provides this facility.

Many Companies use the AWS cloud for solving real-world problems.

AGRICULTURE

“INDIA IS MOVING TOWARDS DIGITIZATION”

  • IFFCO - Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited is also known as IFFCO.

It is the world’s largest fertilizer cooperative federation in India which is registered as a Multistate Cooperative society.

It is headquartered in New Delhi, India for manufacturing, management purposes, and marketing the fertilizers.

The Problems in India are-

  1. Illiteracy

  2. Cost

  3. Less Awareness

So these are some issues that need to be solved and our Honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi said we have to move towards digitization so one of the steps is IFFCO using AWS.

IFFCO is an e-commerce website that connects farmers with sellers who are far from the village area. Farmers usually traveled a lot from Rural to Urban areas for buying the crops, fertilizers and that cost alot to them so the Government of India found a solution to this which is a website.

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION -

Earlier India was not digitized because of less awareness and lack of resources but our Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the world and found the reason why India is not Growing and why Indians have stopped thinking?

Our government is coming forward and started making “Broadband Highways”  so that people living in rural areas can access the Internet and do their activities the same as Urban areas people do.

FARMERS TIME -

IFFCO has 36,000 cooperative societies and 55 million farmers connected with the online medium so that farmers can buy the fertilizers with the minimum cost because due to weather the farmers are affected so much so to save their money somewhere is the responsibility of Government.

At the end of the first quarter of 2018, IFFCO’s revenues were INR 20,788 crores [$2.9 billion].

IFFCO Portal contains 13 languages for the ease of farmers.

“We wanted to empower farmers through e-commerce, giving them the option of ordering online if that saved them money or even time, instead of having to make long journeys to local retailers,” says Mr. Anil Kumar Gupta, general manager of IT Services at IFFCO.

WEEKS TO DAYS

  1. Earlier we thought to launch our own servers over our own land but AWS is so much capable of doing things because it does management with the low-cost and provides different - different services at minimal cost with higher efficiency.

  2. To launch our servers and do other things takes 3-4 weeks but AWS did in just 3 days with the autoscaling capability.

  3. AWS services cost just the cost of electricity.

Things changed when Mr. Gupta became aware of Amazon Web Services (AWS) at a CIO event in India. He recalls, “When we spoke to AWS, we were told an e-commerce portal could be up and running in less than a week. We were amazed because our expectation, which was based on our timeline for procuring on-premises hardware and setting up storage and disaster recovery, was three to four weeks.”

AWS Partner Network(APN) and Umbrella Infocare are also proposed by AWS that helps to deliver e-commerce portals.Mr. Gupta says, “Umbrella Infocare came onboard and we had the site’s portal up-and-running in just three days—an exceptional feat by any standard. Although I was initially concerned about low internet speeds in rural areas, I found that it didn’t impact our service as much as we had anticipated.”

  • The IFFCO website for farmers is launched on 12 Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud and delivered by Magento which is on Amazon Virtual Private Cloud.

  • Records of purchased items are stored in the Amazon Relational Database Service.

  • APIs connect AWS with the Order Management  System which delivers the purchased item.

  • Videos and images are stored in Amazon Simple Storage Service.

  • CloudFront is used for faster access.

  • Amazon Elastic Transcoder is used to convert the videos into the version which is supported by user P.C., Tablet, Mobile, etc.

In this Portal, there are so many videos that tell the farmers how to use the product they bought as many farmers are from Tier 2 or Tier 3 cities.

“We are digitizing agriculture in India with AWS—empowering farmers with e-commerce accessibility. In addition, by showcasing videos on effective crop farming, farmers have been able to increase their crop yields by more than 25 percent,” Mr. Gupta says.

Mr. Gupta comments, “With AWS, our IT operations efficiency has improved by at least 80 percent while generating cost savings of more than 50 percent because we can select, deploy, and manage AWS resources with ease. There is no procurement cycle or need to dedicate capital budgets to projects. Our monthly AWS billing is nowhere near the cost of electricity for an on-premises environment of a similar size.”

Mr. Gupta adds, “Our AWS deployment has been designed to be highly available. We have placed our deployment in two availability zones, and we used AWS Auto Scaling to make it highly scalable. The most significant benefit of partnering with AWS is that we have not experienced any downtime since our deployment.”

NEXT STEP -

With the huge population and fewer jobs, many people failed to get the required job plus lack of awareness didn’t allow rural area people to grow so taking this issue seriously IFFCO made the “IFFCO YUVA” website to search for jobs and apply for it.

Mr. Gupta comments, “This is only the beginning. We are currently looking at how we can extend the site’s features to help job seekers, especially the young, find employment.”
